Print and Design Buyer Position (posted 5/6/08)
Type: Full-Time Location: Washington, DC This individual
is responsible for purchasing printing services for CQ Press print
publications and design services for cover and text interior designs.
This includes managing all aspects of printing of and design work
for all books, directories, and a weekly publication; preparing
and monitoring of print and creative budgets; working with vendors
to meet CQ Press schedules; releasing completed titles to warehouse;
administering reprint cycle; monitoring quality; purchasing print
and creative services; and analyzing print and creative costs for
financial reporting.
Experience Required: " At least two years experience as a
book print buyer or printing sales rep. In addition, one to three
additional years of related experience as a print buyer or sales
rep and/or as an art designer in book publishing. Knowledge of and
experience with (minimum one year) budgeting and tracking costs.
Knowledge of and experience with (minimum one year) of project management.
Employment or comparable experience in which artistic evaluation
is required. Bachelor's Degree or comparable experience.
Specific Responsibilities: Solicits competitive bids from
vendors; reviews project requirements and prepares specifications;
develops schedules; communicates CQ Press expectations to vendors;
advises editorial and production staff on vendor requirements for
printing; monitors quality; reviews and reconciles final invoices.
Vendor liaison for all print projects in development. Advises editors
and production staff on vendor requirements for printing. Purchasing
authority for approx. $1.8 million per year. Manages publication
reprint cycle and print-on-demand. Commissions cover and text designs,
manages review of creative materials. Prepares and monitors print
and creative budgets, generates monthly financial report on publications
in production. Analyzes print costs and provides information for
financial reporting. Prepares purchase orders, coordinates deliveries,
receives inventory, releases backorders and publication standing
orders, and enters new titles in Vista Inventory Management system.
Facilitates coordination with electronic publishing branch of company.
Liaison with CQ Researcher printer for pricing and scheduling, runs
weekly mailing labels thru Vista, receives inventory, releases backorders,
orders reprints. Guides Green Press Initiative publishing efforts.
Works on own initiative under general direction of Director, OPD/IT/Production;
does not require day-to-day supervision.
Relationship Responsibilities: This position reports to the
Director of OPD/IT/Production. This person will work closely with
editors, business unit heads, production manager, marketing staff,
and others in developing print schedules and cover designs. He/she
will also interact with Administration Director, Warehouse Supervisor
and Customer Service in release of publications, and manage the
company relationship with CQ Press printers, designers and other
specialty vendors. Specific Skills: This person must have
worked in an environment that includes the responsibilities similar

DUTIES: This position is primarily concerned with assisting with
the Center's online communications such as the website, e-newsletter,
listservs, a new multimedia portal, intranet, and any new online
communications as they become available. Duties involve writing
and editing materials for appropriate audiences; photo research
and acquisition; planning, posting and overseeing website content
to include text, documents, images and audio/video files; working
as the primary editor of the intranet; and assisting with the development
of communication plans by considering which topics to emphasize,
determining the most effective media, and writing compelling headlines

with, and troubleshooting the Center's centralized database; analyzing
website traffic statistics using WebTrends software and making recommendations

QUALIFICATIONS: minimally qualified applicants will have 1 year
of directly related experience writing, editing materials for and/or
