Programs
Throughout the year, WBP sponsors about half a dozen evening programs, plus occasional brown-bag lunch discussions and tours. WBP also holds a holiday party and book gift exchange in December and a ceremony and reception to announce and honor winners of each year's Book Design & Effectiveness Awards.

What Makes Effective Design?
The following panel of recognized designers will help WBP and WNBA members explore this question in depth:
Debra Naylor, Naylor Design Piper Wallis, Rowman and Littlefield Publishing Group Will Thomas, National Science Teachers Association
Please plan to attend, and bring your questions, insights, and comments to share! The facilitator will be WBP’s vice president, Deborah Weiner.
The program, which is being hosted by WBP and cosponsored by WNBA, will be held at the International City/County Management Association, located at 777 North Capitol Street NE, Suite 500, Washington, DC. Plan to arrive between 6:00 and 6:45 p.m. for light refreshments and socializing. Then you can enjoy the panel’s wisdom and experiences—and even participate in the discussion—from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
RSVPs are requested by January 25. rsvp@washingtonbooks.org

Updated Tips and Tools for Editors by Barbara B. Hart, President Publications Professionals LLC
October 19, 2011
The two-hour workshop was free for editors eager to increase their expertise in the publishing field.
Co-sponsored by the Editorial Freelancers Association and Washington Book Publishers
Timely Topics Covered:
* in-text references, reference lists, and bibliographies (how to help the author and to edit for a useful and usable list in correct style)
* changes during the past decade in how books are being produced and processed (production steps)
* fact checking and research (mandatory these days, but where to search that is authoritative?)
* the editorial and proofreading marking system and its changes as a result of electronic production (a centuries-old system that some want to toss out; can they?)
* informal publishing (anyone can publish on the Internet these days, but how to cite those works?)
* effects of too much early design on editing (monstrously heavy files that crash)
* e-books........a moving target (and errors extant even when the print version was clean)
Q&A with those attending
